U.S. CD REVENUE SURGES 58.6% AT MIDYEAR
WHAT HAPPENED
The RIAA says U.S. wholesale CD revenue rose 58.6% in the first half of 2026. Total physical revenue grew 25.9% to $731.5 million, while streaming remained the largest recorded-music source.
WHY INDEPENDENT ARTISTS SHOULD CARE
Physical music is not only vinyl. A CD can give some audiences an affordable collectible and give artists a direct-sale product—but national growth does not prove your fans will buy.
THE DEEPER ARTIST LESSON
A trend is a signal, not a purchase order. Inventory becomes income only when demand, pricing and margin are real.
WHAT TO DO NOW
• Ask fans which format they want.
• Test preorders before manufacturing.
• Calculate every unit’s break-even point.
SEVAD’S TAKEAWAY
Do not manufacture nostalgia. Validate demand.
Would your audience buy a CD from you now?
